Women Pilots of WWII
On Saturday, March 25 at 1:00 p.m., the McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center (MRHHC) will offer a program honoring women pilots of WWII, including McKeesport’s own Helen Richey. Noted novelist, screenwriter and WWII aficionado Ms. Denise Deems brings her knowledge and enthusiasm for WWII history to the Center for this special program in recognition of Women’s History Month.
Join us as Ms. Deems delves into the history of female pilots and their impact during WWII, sets the stage for the archaic and adverse pre-war and post-war atmosphere they endured, and discusses Helen Richey’s journey and the death of Amelia Earhart. Ms. Deems will recount the day-to-day activities and experiences of these heroines and recognize their notable legacies. We are proud to salute these brave, skilled and often unheralded aviators.
To enhance the program, Ms. Deems has generously permitted us to exhibit an extensive collection of corroborating WWII artifacts, including an array of original and reproduction American and British flight gear, original WAFS and WASP insignia, badges and patches, ATA log books and a flip book detailing flight instructions for various planes. We are excited to offer this collection to our visitors from March 1 – 25, 2017. Program admission is $5.00; however, the MRHHC offers complimentary daily admission.
Founded in 1980, the McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center is a museum and research facility dedicated to preserving the history of the Mon Valley for public education, research, and enjoyment. The MRHHC is a non-profit, tax exempt organization under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. We are YOUR Mon Valley Museum!
